Yesterday, it was announced the co-founder of Midtown Records, René Bakker, passed away. René opened his own record store in 1987 together with Hans Tieleman, which later expanded into a huge record label and organisator of different events.

Midtown Records as a record store could be found in many cities, in which loads of DJs such as Paul Elstak bought their records. Among others, Rotterdam Records and Terror Traxx are sublabels of the later founded record label Midtown Records. Furthermore, Midtown organised iconic events such as A Nightmare in Rotterdam.

“Over the years many of us have spoken with René about contracts, events or for just a simple cup of coffee and got to know a very friendly person with a fantastic sense of humor. Many DJs talked with René at one of the Mid-town shops and left with too much fresh vinyl in their hands.

René, all the best up there

As a co-founder of Midtown Records, René has achieved so much for the Dutch music scene, and definitely also for hardcore. We’re very sorry for the loss, and wish the loved ones of René the best.
